The Perfect Day of Relaxation and Indulgence
Some pairings simply belong together. Strawberries and cream. A fireside and a good book. And, as anyone who has tried it will tell you, a spa treatment followed by afternoon tea.
There’s a lovely logic to it. A massage or facial leaves you floating; afternoon tea gives you somewhere soft to land. Instead of rushing back to real life with damp hair and a to-do list, you drift from the treatment room to a table laid with finger sandwiches, warm scones and a pot of properly brewed tea – and the calm gets to linger a few hours longer.
At Pendley Manor, spa packages with afternoon tea are among the most-booked experiences we offer, for birthdays, Mother’s Day, anniversaries, catch-ups between friends and – quite rightly – no occasion at all. Here’s what makes the combination so special, and what to expect from a day with us.
A spa package with afternoon tea typically combines a spa treatment, use of the spa facilities, and a full afternoon tea in a single experience. At Pendley Manor in Hertfordshire, that means an ESPA treatment of your choice, time in our indoor pool, sauna and steam room with robes, towels and flip flops provided, followed by afternoon tea served in the elegant surroundings of a Grade II listed manor house, around 40 minutes from London.
Why spa and afternoon tea are the perfect pair
A spa-only day can feel like it ends abruptly; a meal-only treat skips the pampering. Together they create a natural arc – arrive, unwind in the pool and steam room, melt through your treatment, then settle in for tea while the relaxation soaks in.
It’s sociable and restorative. Treatments are blissfully solitary; afternoon tea is where you compare notes. For friends, mothers and daughters, or couples, it’s the best of both – an hour of quiet followed by cake and conversation.
It makes an occasion of an afternoon. You don’t need a full weekend away to feel properly treated. A spa and afternoon tea package turns a single afternoon into something that feels like a holiday.
It’s the gift that never misses. Vouchers for spa days with afternoon tea are one of our most popular gifts – thoughtful, indulgent and impossible to leave unused in a drawer.
What a spa day with afternoon tea at Pendley Manor looks like
The setting
Pendley Manor is a Grade II listed Victorian manor house set in 35 acres of Hertfordshire parkland on the edge of the Chilterns , and the relaxation begins the moment you enter the long tree lined driveway. Our resident peacocks patrol the gardens and have been known to supervise afternoon tea through the windows.
The spa
Your day includes use of our leisure facilities: the indoor pool, sauna and steam room, with robes, towels and flip flops all provided. Most guests arrive a little early for a swim and a steam before their treatment – we recommend it, as warm, relaxed muscles make every treatment better.
The treatments
Our therapists use premium ESPA products, and packages typically let you choose your treatment. Depending on the package, options include:
- Back, neck and shoulder massage – the classic tension-melter
- ESPA Express facial – brightening, deeply relaxing, and a lovely pre-tea glow
- Foot and leg massage or hand and arm reviver – quietly transformative
- Salt and oil scrub – for skin that feels brand new
- File and polish on fingers or toes – the finishing touch
Fancy more than one? Our fuller spa days include two treatments alongside your dining, and packages with lunch or prosecco are available if afternoon tea isn’t your cup of, well, tea.
The afternoon tea
Then, the second act: afternoon tea served in the manor’s elegant lounge – a quintessentially English affair of delicate finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and jam, and a tier of pastries and cakes, all accompanied by your choice of teas or coffee. Add a glass of prosecco and the afternoon officially becomes a celebration.
There’s no rushing it. Afternoon tea is designed to be lingered over, which is precisely why it pairs so well with that deep post-treatment calm.
Who is a spa and afternoon tea package perfect for?
Almost everyone, in truth, but a few occasions suit it especially well. It’s the reliably perfect gift for Mother’s Day and birthdays, particularly as a voucher, and a favourite for friends’ catch-ups, where the afternoon becomes equal parts pampering and gossip. Couples love it as a shared treat that doesn’t require committing to a full weekend away, while hen parties and small celebrations find it relaxed, elegant and effortless to organise. And of course, no occasion is needed at all, sometimes the reason is simply that it’s been a long month, and you’re running on empty.
Making the most of your spa and afternoon tea day
A few tips from our spa team:
Arrive early. Give yourself time to change, swim and steam before your treatment rather than dashing in at the last minute.
Come make-up light. Especially if you’ve chosen a facial – your therapist will cleanse your skin anyway, and you’ll leave with a glow that needs no help.
Bring only the essentials. A swimsuit, a hairbrush and hair tie, and your usual bits for afterwards. We provide robes, towels and flip flops. (We’ve written a full packing guide for a spa day if you like to be thorough.)
Save your appetite. Afternoon tea is more generous than it looks – those tiers add up. A light breakfast is the professional approach.
Book ahead for weekends. Our treatment rooms are intimate by design, and spa days with afternoon tea book up quickly around Mother’s Day, Christmas and school holidays.
